East Boston’s First Synagogue

The first Synagogue in East Boston founded in East Boston was Congregation Ohel Jacob.  The original building was St. John's Episcopal Church on the corner of Paris and Gove Streets.  In 1905 the church was torn down and rebuilt as a synagogue. A fire destroyed the synagogue on February 23, 1973.  All records of the synagogue were destroyed in the fire, including the handwritten Sacred Scrolls.
